Practical Canine Enrichment

With Allie Bender

This week, to tackle Practical Canine Enrichment I’m joined by Allie Bender CDBC, CPDT-KA, SBA.

Along with Emily Strong, Allie wrote the book “Canine Enrichment in the Real World” – available on Amazon and founded Pet Harmony Training.  You can find out more about them at https://petharmonytraining.com/, or find them on Facebook (Pet Harmony Training) or Instagram @petharmonytraining

Allie is in the Chicago area, Emily is in Salt Lake City, Utah; and Ellen is in California.

She’s also offering Pet Parents a free Enrichment Chart (https://www.petharmonytraining.com/enrichmentchart) to help you get started with your own Enrichment plan!

Allie helps us break through the confusion about Enrichment.  We talk about where it came from (zoos!) and what its true purpose is in your dog’s life!  Listen to all her wisdom about how to see what your individual dog needs and make sure the enrichment is actually enriching to your dog!

Recommendations for Practical Canine Enrichment

Here are some links to some of Allie’s favorite’s Feeding Puzzles

KONG Wobbler

Tricky Treat Ball

Busy Buddy Magic Mushroom

It should be noted that these come in different sizes based on how much food you want it to hold.  You can always buy a bigger one for a smaller dog, just don’t fill it up all the way

Recommendations for Calming Enrichment

KONG

Licky Mats

Remember to thoroughly clean these food toys between dogs – some can be boiled in hot water or run through the dishwasher

Make sure to watch your dog when you introduce them to a new enrichment, and to watch how they behave afterward to see if it’s meeting the need you intend it to

Recommendations for Physical Enrichment

Scent work

Flirt Poles

Allie and Emily’s Webinar with Mike Shikashio

Using Enrichment to Treat Aggression Webinar ($30)
